The 3rd Annual Elizabeth Alexander Spirit Award was presented at our May General Meeting. This award is given yearly to someone that is dedicated toward the JLCU Mission, has commitments to community service outside of Junior League, has shown a willingness to step forward to get the job done when the need arises, puts the needs of family, friends, and community before her own, and consistently inspires others with her optimism and spirit.

This year's recipient is Abby Hobbs.  She has been active in League for ten years while holding leadership positions, including past President, for nine of those years!  She has been active with various organizationsSpiritAward.jpg including her church, CU Schools Foundation, and Dr. Howard school.  As busy as she is she never hesitates to change a meeting or rearrange her schedule to be there for her daughters or husband --- THEY always come first!  Her endless bright smile and attitude are a constant inspiration to others.  She has the ability to make the hardest of jobs seem fun, exciting, and even rewarding!

Champaign, Ill.--August 18, 1999--The Membership Development Committee of the Junior League of Champaign-Urbana hosted a special "Road Rally" bus tour of past Junior League projects in Champaign and Urbana last night.  The evening tour was lead by the voice of Junior League, Brenda Koester, and was planned to showcase 12 key projects championed by Junior League to women who have joined the organization this summer.

Highlights of the tour included:
Krannert Art Center - In 1963, Junior League started the Krannert Docents program  In 1990, the Artscope program was developed by Junior League to provide a resource room and training area for local teachers.

Crisis Nursery - In 1984, Junior League started the Crisis Nursery.  It continues to offer an "island of safety" for children whose parents are experiencing a crisis or stressful situation such as accidents, hospitalization, or domestic violence where a child is at risk of harm.  The care is short term and at no cost to families that have no other resource while trying to resolve a crisis situation.

Parkland College - In 1974, Junior League sponsored the first Champaign-Urbana Awareness course at Parkland.  In 1989, the SPOT project was developed to provide financial assistance, tutoring, and career planning to low income single parents attending Parkland.

700 block, E. Park Street, Urbana, Habitat for Humanity - In June 1999, Junior League helped frame a house for a single mother with 3 children.  This was the first of the Done In A Day mini-project series.  Another house will be worked on SpecialBus.jpgin September.

8 other sites were visited during the tour.  The tour started and ended at the new Illinois Terminal; Junior League of Champaign-Urbana's new headquarters location beginning September 1st, 1999.
